Let’s dive in!

Highlights of the week

Free Users Can Access Features of ChatGPT-4o

You no longer need to pay $20 to browse, file uploads, Google Drive and One Drive integration, data analysis, and customized GPTs; they are now free for everyone

The image is a screenshot of a tweet from OpenAI's official Twitter account. The tweet reads: "All ChatGPT Free users can now use browse, vision, data analysis, file uploads, and GPTs." Below this message is a retweet from OpenAI dated May 13, 2024, which says: "We're opening up access to our new flagship model, GPT-4o, and features like browse, data analysis, and memory to everyone for free (with limits)." The post has garnered significant engagement, with 2,300 reposts, 824 quotes, 17K likes, and 1,969 bookmarks. The tweet was posted at 9:29 PM on May 29, 2024, and has 6 million views.

Does it mean everyone should drop their subscription now? I don’t think so.

While free-tier users can get a sense of what ChatGPT-4o is capable of, their experience is extremely minimal.

The image is a screenshot of a social media conversation: BarnieCooper: "what do you even get for paying anymore?" (63 upvotes) Dotcaprachiappa: "The free version is extremely limited, after like 20 messages it stops" (47 upvotes) Atcollins1993: "20?! I’d say it’s FAR closer to 6 or 7!" (50 upvotes) water_bottle_goggles: No text provided. The discussion is about the limitations of a free service version.

When OpenAI says “with limits,” they actually mean it. Yes, this is still a great opportunity if you are in the free tier and want to explore the new features, but it is not a sustainable alternative to upgrading your workflow.

Is this paving the way for…something BIG?

People are articulating that OpenAI is giving access to paid features for free because there is something much bigger coming soon.

Kevin Scott, Microsoft's CTO, promises a whale-sized supercomputer to build the next model of ChatGPT.

The whale's size is a huge leap compared to the shark-sized to train ChatGPT-3 and the orca-sized for ChatGPT-4. A bigger supercomputer might be essential for ChatGPT to prevent outages like yesterday’s.

A person stands on stage presenting a slide that features a large 3D rendering of a whale, with smaller marine animals in the background. The text on the slide reads, "...just deployed." The presenter is on the left side of the image, wearing a patterned shirt, and the stage is illuminated with blue and purple lighting.

This means that general users and developers can expect more powerful, efficient, cost-effective, and versatile AI tools.
