Highlights of the week

AI Surpasses Humans: Redefining Competency

Stanford just launched its 2024 AI Index Research; here are some notable takeaways:

1. AI beats humans in the majority of performance benchmarks.
2. AI helps workers be more productive and leads to higher work quality.
3. There’s a lack of standardized benchmarks for LLM responsibility.
4. 52% of Americans report feeling more concerned than excited about AI.

Although AI has not surpassed humans at all benchmarks, such as competition-level mathematics, visual commonsense reasoning, and planning, it’s coming very close. 

Notably, the comparison here is between standard AI models (such as GPT-4 and Gemini) and humans who can actually do advanced math (not just any human).

This finding yields a need to build more complex and challenging tests for AI. 

But more importantly, it is to build new tests that not only compare AI and human competency but also highlight where humans and AI differ and where humans still have a competitive edge.

Now, we might need to redefine productivity, competency, and performance so that humans and AI can be companions instead of competitors.

Meta Llama 3 and Meta AI

Meta introduces Meta Llama 3 as the most capable open-source LLM so far. 

What excites people is not it's just another LLM or its impressive performance but the fact that it is open-source.

This means the code, training process, and architecture information are accessible for free. 

Everyone can read, use, download, and build a new AI application with Llama. Meta also uploaded a guide on integrating and building with Llama.

With the new model, Meta also launches Meta AI, a general assistant chatbot. 

You will see Meta AI soon in your everyday apps, as Meta will also include it in Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp to assist you on these platforms.
