Humane AI Pin: Is The Post-Smartphone Era Here?

The short answer is no. Not yet.

But I love the vision of Humane.

Humane, a startup founded by Apple ex-employees, funded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, just shipped its first patch of Humane AI Pin.

The Humane AI Pin, in essence, is a combination of your smartphone and AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. It’s “a phone without a screen” and “Star Strek’s label pin.”

You wear the pin on your top and talk to it like you tell Siri or Alexa to help you call a friend, craft a message, take a photo, search a movie schedule, or note something down.

Humane AI pin can also project a a laser-ink screen onto your palm, and you can navigate it like you use your phone.

The idea of Humane AI pin is for you to spend less time on screen and more time in the moment. They envision a future where AI can help you be more in touch with yourself and the world surrounding you rather than making you drift apart.

Everything sounds wonderful on paper (I mean, their website), but the reviews from the first batch of the AI pin speak otherwise.

People are struggling with the pin because speech-based technology does not work well in crowded environments like a station, gives no helpful answer, or even gives false information. As we cannot see what the pin is seeing, it captures and gives the wrong answer to what you are asking for.

The idea of a post-smartphone, no-screen era where AI is seamlessly integrated into life sounds novel and appealing, but it’s not here yet.

But in several years to come, would you try it?
