Simple Use Cases to Start Your AI in HR Journey
Practical AI for HR: Discover simple use cases, like policy creation with ChatGPT, to save time and enhance your HR workflows.

As a Chief People Officer and a student of technology and business, I often have the luxury of seeing things happening before they occur. I saw the AI capabilities way before ChatGPT with my startup KAE.ai (which we failed to launch), and I continue to see AI's amazing possibilities across many HR functions.
While this ability to see the future and make predictions has been a benefit, I am often too far in the future in my instructions or advice. In a previous blog post, I made a prediction called “AI Agents Everywhere All at Once,” a simple reference to the movie. I saw agents as an incredible business opportunity.
I made this prediction in December 2023, and we still don’t see agents in everyday life. So, in this blog post, I am returning to simplicity. The post is not a provocation about the future but a bit of short and straightforward advice on using AI today as an HR leader.
It makes sense since this blog is called AI in HR Today!

In a recent report, Rethinking the Workweek, Work Time Reduction and FlexOS discuss the possibilities of a shorter workweek.
There have been many experiments of shorter workweeks in Europe and other international regions, but the concept has seen lots of skepticism and pushback in the US. In the report, they cite a 2023 large-scale study done by Autonomy that found 71% of the US labor force could reduce their work hours by at least 10-15% thanks to AI-driven productivity gains. 28% would be able to achieve a 20% reduction.
With this information, let's look at simple use cases to reduce your current workload.
The first simple use case involves using ChatGPT to create a policy.
In the past, we would ask folks for examples of policies, especially for those in fast-growing companies where the HR function was going from zero to 1. As a situation arose (we have employees asking to travel globally, but there is no policy), we would go into our networks and ask folks for sample policies. It was a treasure trove of policy documents and easy for folks to share redacted policy versions.
Frankly, although rare, I still see these requests coming through these channels, even with access to ChatGPT. So, instead of waiting for your networks to respond, prompt ChatGTP. Here is an example: I put in a simple prompt, “Act as the head of human resources…” and ask ChatGPT for that global remote work policy. Within seconds, you get a response that includes the purpose, scope, policy guidelines, non-compliance results, and effective date.
This not only saves time but also ensures a comprehensive policy.

Think about all those policies where you had to copy and paste or start at zero. If you need an unlimited PTO policy, prompt ChatGTP(see below), which will output a policy on unlimited PTO. You can check out the output of this prompt in the link to the policy examples at the end of this article.

You likely had to create a remote working policy if you have been in HR during the past few years and COVID. Today, the remote, hybrid, and in-office UFC match plays out in real-time. Your CEO has likely reached out asking about a full return to work.
Outside of the debates on what is most effective for your business and employees, and depending on where your company lands, you can ask ChatGTP to help. You are fully remote and must build policies around returning to the office. Prompt ChatGTP (see below) will output a return to office policy.

Okay, now you have become an editor rather than a copywriter for HR policies. You now have a full hour back in your day—you’re welcome. These systems are not perfect, so please make sure you check the AI’s work before you publish.
Remember, be an editor, not a creator. Your role in guiding AI's outputs is crucial and empowers you to ensure the policies align with your company's values and needs.
If you want to download the results of the prompts listed above, click here. Remember, none of these are 100% perfect, so be sure to act as an editor and don’t copy, paste, and publish. Enjoy! Remember that AI is a tool to assist you, not a replacement for your expertise and judgment.
Using these examples as inspiration, I invite you to share your experiences and the policies you created with ChatGPT. Your insights can inspire others and contribute to the growing community of HR professionals leveraging AI.
